Chicken rice and Chilli Crab Sauce (interactive demonstration)

For chicken rice, we will share with you the technique of making succulent and tender chicken together with the flavourful chicken rice as well as the must-have chilli and ginger sauces. You will get to roll your very own rice balls.

For chilli crab sauce, we will reveal the secrets in the making of our spicy and tangy chilli crab sauce which combined ribbons of egg and serves on a bed of crab meat salad. Rest assured that this recipe will not be a daunting one!

For Ondeh Ondeh (hands-on)

For dessert, you will get to make from scratch the popular ondeh ondeh which is a type of soft and chewy kueh using sweet potato filled with gula melaka and covered with desiccated coconut.

Once done, let’s enjoy a fulfilling meal.

Discover the culinary delights of Singapore's Chinatown with our guide that includes a hawker center and other food sites to sample authentic dishes such as chwee kueh (water rice cake), poh piah (spring rolls), freshly pressed sugar cane etc.  On this trail, we will pass by temples and other cultural sights while learning about the neighborhood’s diverse culinary heritage. We will share with you the charms and diversity of traditional Chinatown as well as its origins.

Schedule

• 12:00 pm: Class begins with demonstration on preparing and cooking chicken rice
• 12:15 pm: Hands-on for ondeh ondeh and tasting
• 12.45 pm: Demonstration on chilli crab sauce and tasting
• 1:10 pm: Demonstration on chilli and ginger sauce
• 1:15 pm: Time to enjoy your chicken rice
• 1:50 pm: End of class and proceed to meet our guide at Chinatown MRT exit A (next to passenger service office) for the food tour
• 2:00 pm: Visit Chinatown Complex which comprise a hawker center to sample a variety of local dishes and a sprawling wet market which sell a wide range of produce.
  • Next, walk down the streets of Chinatown, listening to stories about the neighborhood's early immigrants, and pass by religious sites like Hindu temples and mosques. Cool off with a stop at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) gallery, where you'll learn how city planners transformed Singapore from a fishing village to a cosmopolitan city.

Finally, enjoy a sample of kopi tarik or teh tarik—‘pulled’ coffee or tea made with condensed milk and poured between two cups until it’s super frothy. You’ll sip it with tasting of roti prata (pancake-style bread).
