About

Katsu curry, a dish of a crisp pork cutlet on a bed of silky curry and steaming hot rice is a well-loved Japanese dish enjoyed by both young and old, at restaurants and at home. The dish is becoming more and more familiar abroad, and we’d like to invite you to make Katsu curry here in Asakusa where the dish was first served in 1918, just over a century ago. We will make curry from scratch, so you can easily recreate the same flavors at home! We offer a uniquely Japanese twist to this classic curry by using a classic dashi base.

You can order sake for tasting at an additional charge of 500JPY/glass (approx. 5USD)

"Simply excellent!"

We highly recommend this cooking class! If you like tasty food and appreciate a cooking teacher who is nice and is highly skilled, this is a must attend class! Dieser Kochkurs ist einfach toll! Der Koch und seine Frau haben sich sehr viel Zeit genommen um Fragen zu beantworten und jeder Schritt wurde im Detail erklärt. Wer mehr über japanische Küche erfahren möchte, der ist hier genau richtig!

"Cooking and Cultivating a Comforting Curry"

Ken's Katsu Curry Cooking Class at Chagohan Tokyo was one of my favorite experiences in Japan this summer. Not only was the end result a delectable dish that I still think about (and will try to replicate back home in Los Angeles), I learned so much from the experience. Ken was an incredibly engaging teacher - both in his easy to follow instructions, but also his historical anecdotes and explanations of the reasons for using ingredients and flavors. He was always enthusiastic and helpful, passionate and welcoming and even patient when I clearly showed my ginger peeling skills were not my strongest. I had so much fun while learning about the dish and preparing it, the time passed quickly and I wish I could have cooked another katsu curry! Eating it was just as enjoyable and when I finally departed and said my thank yous, I was thinking about the next time I would return, to try my hand at another dish or enjoy the curry again. Thank you to Ken and the staff (also for the photos) for a wonderful weekend afternoon I will not soon forget.

"One of the most delicious Japanese-style curries I've ever eaten."

Laid back and light-hearted, this class packs great cooking demonstrations and detailed explanations in two hours. I was especially impressed with Ken, our teacher, who provided the history of Japanese curry as well as additional information on sourcing ingredients and different arrangements of the recipe. There was plenty of space to work and ingredients were pre-measured for convenience. However, the experience was very hands-on between chopping, stirring, breading and frying. Definitely include this class in your trip itinerary--whether you're planning on visiting Asakusa or not!
