Irma's cooking class exceeded our expectations. To start with, we very much enjoyed the market tour during which Irma guided us through a wide variety of local products and flavours. After getting the ingredients, we headed in her beautiful kingdom (home kitchen). The house itself is inspiring - surrounded by a curated garden and with stunning open view from the windows in the city. The culinary experience unfolded for more than 3 hours. From making hibiscus juice to tomatijo sauce, quesadillas, guacamole, tacos - all from scratch and as few to mention, it was the best way to journey the Mexican hospitality and food.
The class is totaly worth it. Mostly because of the people, from the skilled cooks to a competent translator. The kitchen is quite big with excellent equipment and the whole place is just beautiful and brings you quickly into the right mood. Don't miss out on the market visit!
Mexican Cooking: “El Tzitz” specializes in Mexican cooking classes with an emphasis on local produce, local varieties and specialties. Irma López, the main cook, takes pride in her cooking that she has developed over the years, continuously changing and adjusting her recipes to accommodate the seasons and local flavors. The cooking classes take place in a beautiful home in the oldest part of San Cristóbal de las Casas, close to down town, close to the main market but an oasis of beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces overlooking the town.
Whether you would like to learn about the typical, local cooking or just spend some hours in a beautiful setting, preparing and eating great food, this is the place for you. Group classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12 to 3 pm. The first person who
signs up determines the menu of the day. There is an optional tour to the market prior to the classes, starting at 10.30am.
If you would like to have classes on other days or times, individual classes or a particular menu, please contact us.
Our cooking classes are based on presented menus, some of which are adjusted to accommodate for seasonal produce.
