When we first booked this experience, I had my doubts that a group of chefs and food professionals from the US would enjoy a "cooking class", given their collective experience. Nothing could be further from the truth. Chef Minh and his team, in the incredible oasis of Toi Toi culinary center not only taught us unique technique and secrets of Vietnamese classics, they did so in a way that simply floored each chef. The garden, the outdoor grill, the incredibly appointed teaching kitchen, and the finale of sitting down for a lunch of our collective dishes was an experience that could not have been imagined. We had spent 5 days touring shrimp farms and techniques in Souther Vietnam. Finishing our trip in Hanoi with Chen Minh's afternoon of cooking and camaradrie was a highlight of our time Vietnam. Thank you chef and everyone on your team, we had an amazing time! Chef Brad Nelson, Retired VP Global Culinary Marriott International Founder, KitchenOpsConsulting LLC
gained a greater appreciation for Vietnamese food. Interesting time going through the market. Pickle was good at explaining thing, kept the course simple and light. We had time at the end to enjoy the food we/he made which was delicious. I would recommend.
From going to the market to buy fresh ingredients to tasting what we had cooked p, the whole experience was very enjoyable. Hung is a very good chef and a very good teacher, you will assuredly enjoy learning to cook vietnamese food with him.
Hung showed me around the market and cooked four dishes, all very good.
This was the best cooking class I have taken. Starting with the market tour and then the cooking school. Pickle explained everything in a fun and engaging way way . We participated in the cooking as well. The food we ate was delicious.?I sent photos home and have already been asked to demonstrate techniques taught !
Hung (aka Pickle) is a great teacher - funny, charismatic and very easy going. We made five dishes as well as fitted in a trip the market. The class is suitable for cooks of all levels of experience and he makes everyone feel included. The session ended with a lunch of our handiwork - which included spring rolls and bun cha. Strongly recommended.
Chef Hung gave us a true insight into shopping at a local fresh market. He told us about the many different food items, some familiar to Westerners, some that were not and explained what and how they are used in Vietnamese cooking. We returned to the Blue Butterfly Restaurant where we were shown and then prepared and cooked four very tasty dishes which we later ate. There is no doubt that Chef Hung is both a talented chef and teacher and we learned a great deal - even though we cook a lot ourselves at home - we learned new skills and will use Chef Hung's recipes when we return home to England. A great experience and one we would recommend to other travelers - Thank you Chef Hung!
Book it! This is an excellent cooking class; First we went shopping for ingredients through a local street market where the instructor gave a background on the food that was being sold, with a small tasting of the local delicacies on offer. Next was the cooking all of the instructions were explained very clearly and with enthusiasm. An absolutely superb experience which I enjoyed from the start to the end.
The cooking class exceeded both of our wildest expectations for the afternoon. To start with the space was clean organized and everyone was very professional. We reviewed the menu started the broth for our first dish, and then the chef took us all to the market via a wonderful car ride. As we stroll through the market with the chef it was very comfortable knowing you’re with a professional who had been shopping there for over a decade. He knew all of his favorite vendors answered all of our questions and treated us to a few extra goodies along the way including some dried apricots, and the famous incubated duck egg, that would be the duck egg with the baby duck inside! We could go on for many more sentences about how much we loved the experience, but to summarize it was our favorite few hours of our entire Vietnam trip and I couldn’t imagine anyone would be anything less then completely thrilled that they did it!
Such great fun going around the market and choosing the fresh ingredients we were about to use in the cooking class. Good range of dishes made too and our chef made sure everyone had the help they needed
We loved this cooking class. Although we have been to many Asian markets the trip to the market with our chef was great - very informative and a great experience. The cooking class was awesome. We got to cook Ban Xeo as well as our chef felt this was something we would be able to make at home. All food was beautiful and w3 learnt a lot about Vietnamese cooking. Would definitely recommend.
Awesome class and the market tour was great too!
I am an experienced home cook and found this class very enjoyable. The facility was clean and well stocked. The class was organized and had a good flow. We started preparation for one dish then went out to the market and tasted a variety of street foods before returning to prepare the other dishes. I feel I am now capable to take these skills home to prepare some of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. Best of all we were able to sit down and enjoy our meal at the end!
That was truly an amazing experience. Best and the most productive few hours spent in Hanoi crested with a feast of flavours and beautifully served dishes. And what's is the most satisfying - that we cooked it all ourselves. Of course with directions from a great chef Hưng - Pickle. Now it's time to try those recipes at home! :)
I recommend this cooking class! It was a good time in my life!
The Blue Butterfly is located inside the heart of Hanoi Old Quarter, occupying a 300-year-old two-story wooden house that promises a highly atmospheric and enjoyable environment. Its antique architecture should be the most attractive feature of this restaurant with all the furniture made of wood, traditional antiquities and Hanoi’s scenes hanging along the wall…
Getting to know the food is also a great way of learning about the country. Vietnamese food is healthy, simple to cook, delicious, and forms a large part of the culture. This half day tour gives you a hands-on lesson on how to shop for fresh ingredients and cook authentic Vietnamese food.
Blue Butterfly Cooking classes are offered every day in the morning and afternoon. Blue Butterfly Cooking classes are an interactive and fun way to learn new cooking skills and experience the tastes and textures of Vietnamese cuisine.
