Galangal Cooking Studio

I’ve done a lot of Thai cooking classes over the years of travelling to Thailand and this is hands down one of the best. The teacher was so enthusiastic and passionate about sharing her culture and cuisine that you couldn’t help but have a great time. The market tour was authentic and the offering of dishes varied. I was there with my partner so we were able to select a really wide range of our favourite dishes to share. My absolute favourite was the Khao Soi. The facilities were clean and comfortable. It was like being on a cooking show where the tedious prep is done for you. Highly recommend.

The cooking teacher „New“ like „Happy New Year“ was awesome :D totally friendly, always in a good mood and she smiled all the time, although she had a big group just before we came. The Food was delicious and I liked everything. Even for vegetarians there were options. I can only recommend it :)

The market visit was short but interesting. The cooking class itself was absolutely wonderful. Great atmosphere, very friendly cook, and excellent explanations. Everything was very relaxed and easygoing. The dishes are to die for and can easily be recreated at home in Germany. 5 stars for an experience that will delight any cook.

New was the teacher and she was very knowledgeable and friendly. She did an excellent job of communicating the material and my daughter and I felt like we could go home and cook the things we learned to make. And the materials she sent looked great. Many thanks.

I attended the class with my boyfriend and we were lucky enough to have the class to ourselves, we had a great time with our teacher New, she was lovely and easygoing and made learning so easy. I was sad to learn that the cooking school hasn’t been as busy as of late but I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to make some delicious authentic food. I can’t wait to get all the recipes and make them myself when I get home!

Was great learning to prepare so many dishes and a great variety to choose from. Got to eat all the delicious food and New was a really nice and friendly teacher.

We had a lovely experience with Aoy! We went to the market and we had the opportunity to ask many questions about Thai cuisine and ingredients. I went with my husband and we chose 4 dishes each (so we prepared 8 different specialities in total!), and some days later we received the recipes and we have already prepared some of them back home. We definitely recommend this activity to anyone, it was fun and interesting.

I can recommend to take this cooking class. We learned to cook authentic Thai dishes up to our selection. It was a lot of fun!

Aoy and Jay were smiling right from when they picked us up at our hotel until the final bite. They took us on a market tour and explained things that was on the menu and even items that looked interesting that were not on the menu. When we started cooking, Aoy explained each ingredient and how to properly prepare it depending on which dish was being made. Their patience and guidance during the entire class was exceptional. The food was delicious and I can not wait to make these meals for my family back in Canada.

Mam is such a nice person. We really enjoyed this evening in total and learned a lot about thai cooking. I can fully recommend it!

Had an amazing time at this cooking class - it was a very small group, very cosy and private class. We went to the market where they explained the different veggies and spices and in the class we were taught the different dishes and thai cooking style. Everything was so delicious and we had so much fun.

Great cooking class. We had a lot of fun. Our group consisted of 3 people. We had booked the full day course and the other person had booked the half day course. Timewise it was the same, but as we booked the full day course we had the opportunity to make our own curry paste and a soup. The other person was only able watch how we made it. All in all we had a great experience at Galangal Cooking Studio.

Aoy and Bruce were great, I learned how to make 5 thai staples (khao soi and som tum are my favorites). The market tour was incredibly helpful so that I know where to go to get all of the incredible local ingredients. Highly recommended!

Location is good, kitchen is well suited. The market visit is okay and the class was easy to follow and not to hard. I've liked it.

Our instructor was great. She explained the dishes and their cultural context with enthusiasm. Large amount of food left us full afterwards. We also had fun meeting a new set of people. My husband and I are very exciting to make some of the dishes for our friends at home! Highly rated.

An amazing cooking experience starting off with a trip to the local market to learn about Thai spices, seasonings, herbs and vegetables and to pick up our fresh ingredients. Got to make 4 delicious recipes in a well equipped, clean kitchen. Staff were very knowledgeable, friendly, hands on and answered any questions we had. I would strongly recommend it.

The teacher was very informative and passionate about cooking and spent the extra time to explain things,the pick up and drop off made it a lot more convenient and easy.

Oay taught a truly enjoyable class in proper Thai cooking. We learned about the components of the dishs' flavors at a local (no tourists) market. I was prompted for stirring speed and watching for my ingredients to change in color and texture. I ran a mortar and pestle from a chili mist safe distance. I made dishes that had more subtlety than the many fine dishes I've had around town. I ate until I was more than full and still had leftovers to share with my otherwise occupied girlfriend. Good food is fun and this little class just expanded the amount of fun in my life. Thank you so very much.

Chef and owners were very friendly. Spacious and air conditioned kitchen (crucial on a 40C summer day).

Our instructor was excellent! The class was well organized and everything was easier than I expected, yet really delicious. I learned a lot and am glad we booked this class.

I enjoyed the atmosphere and hosts of the class very much. This class includes pickup and drop off, transportation to and from the market, education on Thai ingredients, and 4 different dishes you cook for yourself. Instructions were clear and recipes were delicious, I learned a lot. Cook book was provided. I felt a little rushed for the last two dishes and would prefer consistent pace. Great way to meet new people and society on your trip!

I was pleased they took time at the market to share different ingredients and alternates based on where you may live globally. It was fun to make different dishes and the cooking space for a group of 6 was excellent. Thank you for the class.

Class was held in airconditioned room and was very well organised and food fresh and delicious. Aoy even grows some of her own produce which we used in our cooking. The sticky rice was the best I have tried in Chiang Mai.

Gobby was the best teacher one can have. First we went to the market to see different ingredients. Then he took me in the train to a farm at the countryside where I spent a whole day cooking. I learnt Thai basic cooking and Gobby who speaks perfectly English was by my side for all different questions.

The most striking for me compared to classes I've done in Western countries is how chill this was. I didn't feel time pressured, we just cooked progressively, each with our own choice but of dishes while listening to each other's recipes. Being picked up at the hotel makes it so much easier. As advertised we went to the market, got to learn about the different veggies, came back with produce and cooked the dishes. The owner went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and let us cooked extras like the mango sticky rice and Thai tea, so yummy!

Nu and Tai were amazing and their house was super nice with a cottage behind. They are very welcoming, nice and the little tour in a typical market was amazing. We immediately felt like it was our home away from home. The cooking class was super cool and the conversations super constructive. Not only did we learn about Thai cooking but also about its culture and people. I definitely recommend it.

Cuando llegamos a Chiang Mai no sabíamos si nos daria tiempo a aprender a cocinar los platos que tanto nos gusta comer aqui y que tanto echamos de menos cuando estamos en casa y asi a sido . Lo preparan todo muy bien para que sea facil para cualquier no iniciado y la clase es entretenida y pasa el tiempo muy rapido . Yo lo recomendaro a cualquiera , no es ni mucho menos tiempo perdido es otra vivencia con este pueblo maravilloso . Gracias a Galangal por una estupenda mañana

Tuve una clase privada porque naide más se apuntó esa mañana y para mi fue un lujo. La escuela tiene una terraza preciosa donde puedes comer todo lo que cocines, que va a ser mucho, así que más te vale ir con hambre. Incluye una visita a un mercado local muy pequeñito donde puedes comprar algunos ingredientes que luego usarás en la clase. Cuando yo fui justo había una fiesta en el templo que está en frente y en un descanso fuimos a verlo. La profesora no dudó en dejarme una de sus faldas para que pudiera entrar al templo. Muy divertido!!!

Teacher Tae was kind and knowledgeable. The food was tasty and I’m happy to have the recipe book (pdf). The experience would have been better with more people in the class.

I took my teenage kids to this cooking class, i thought they would get bored but they enjoyed every moment. The class was very informative and interactive. The market tour was unbelievable. It was a delight to see my kids interested in each spices and were eager to ask the locals to explain where it came from or what is the taste. For the first time, i saw my kids holding a knife and enjoying the activity. We each prepared and learned 4 dishes and had the opportunity to bring home the recipe booklet.

Great food, great instructor, great experience. We didn’t get to make dessert, but, I was taken to another class so I could watch. And I got to enjoy some amazing mango with sticky rice!

Tae was a wondeful teacher; very informative, nice, and funny. From the market tour, to the 5 course meal, couldn't have asked for a better experience. We learned a lot and we were stuffed!

I had a private class because i was the only one this morning. It was amazing, they explained everything at the Market and it was great to explore together the different tastes and smells. They took out a lot of time for explaining and showing what I have to do. I liked all the dishes. It was delicious and easy to cook. Thank you so much, i had an amazing time with you ❤

Very nice teacher and recipes !

6 moderately experienced and complete newbies from our group managed to cook out 4 incredible dishes each! And we even have a 9-yo amongst us whose only experience of cooking is building sandwiches and whipping up basic bakes in school! To top it off, our Thai Noodles, desserts, salads and curries all tasted great if not wonderful! We would definitely try this again with Galangal Cooking School again the next time we are in Chiangmai! Colin Goh

I was impressed with how well the class moved along given all of the variety. The class was designed so that each participant could pick 1 of 4 options for 4 different courses (appetizer, soup, stir fry, curry). Our class of 9 people made at least 2 different dishes for each course, so there was a lot of movement but it was all very well organized. The market visit was appreciated to get more familiar with the ingredients. The portion sizes were right on for a large dinner. For $30 USD, the price was a fraction of what you can find in places like Phuket. Amazing value!

Had a wonderful time with Tae and his crew learning about ingredients and how to cook some traditional Thai dishes. Definitely a highlight of our trip!

Our instructor was very kind and helpful, and had a great way of managing the kitchen to instruct our groups. We could choose 4 dishes to make, out of a large selection, and he was able to instruct everyone at once very smoothly. 10/10, would go again!

Third class of this kind and the first to show me how to use a curry paste properly. It was good to learn how to make them with other schools but this is more realistic as it is the time consuming part of Thai cooking. All other dishes just as fab.

The instructors were amazing and it's a perfect way to meet new people and to learn how to prep and cook a few popular and delicious local meals. If you have a spare day and are not sure what you should do....I highly recommend taking this class. You won't regret it

Very funny and useful experience. Teachers (a Canadian and a Thai couple) were so kind. The course includes transport from hotel to the cooking place and back, visit and explanation to the local market, cooking and eating 4 dishes and recipes by email. I recommend it 100%!

Quickly, we felt at ease with Bruce. His friendship and ability to explain with simple words have been a great plus. The course itself was great ... around the table people from Taiwan, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, Israel and Belgium. All there to share the same thing... the passion of cooking. Thanks again to Bruce, his wife and their employees for that great moment.

Aoy was our instructor and she is awesome!!! Everything went according to plan; she is organized, prepared, knowledgeable, and the food turned out great! The 1st stop was the local market and she walked us through the aisles describing the local produce (all of which we used later). Next we took a stroll through the garden so we could get an even better understanding of our ingredients (lemon basil smells sooo good). Then came the cooking... each course is prepared separately so you get a chance to enjoy it while it’s still hot. While you’re cooking, it all comes together quickly but she still makes sure to explain what ingredients add which flavor (salty, sweet, bitter, spicy) so you can cater the flavor of your dish to your liking. Definitely money and time well spent. Oh yea, her English is really good and she makes it fun! Highly recommended on all accounts!!! Thanks Aoy!!!

The market and the experience to cook the delicious food.

It was fascinating to learn all about Thai herbs, vegetables, spices, sauces etc. The market tour was a neat experience and very informative. And cooking so many yummy dishes made me miss cooking back home in America. Eating was the best part! Yum!

We went on the 1st of September (2018) and it was superb! Opal was our teacher and she was amazing, very helpful, flexible and super friendly! She brought us to a local market before the cooking class. She explained a few things about Thai ingredients and it's use. After we head back to cook! Because we were a small group we had a lot of time, she explained that we could cook and eat or cook everything and eat later. She offer take away the food we couldn't eat. It was to much for us :) She even offered herself to solve any doubt or questions we have on the future when cooking at home. We recommend it 100% And thanks again Opal Kob kun Ka!!

Despite a mix-up at the start (which was handled very professionally), this was an excellent experience. Our instructor, Opal, was a joy to work with, spoke excellent english, had a great sense of humor, and made it all so easy! This was a great way to crack the code on Thai cooking basics, and very well organized in a better-than-expected cooking facility. Top notch!

I can only say good things about Galangal Cooking Studio! The dishes were amazing, easy to understand and you get all the recipes. Everything was perfectly planned and the staff was amazing, super friendly and charming!

So much fun, we were four inter-generational family members, all women. Aoy our cooking instructor and cooking school own was so easy to work with, lots of of Information about the staple ingredients in Thai cooking and the region of Thailand the food was from. We able to select the dish we wanted to prepare from five selections, four meal categories, lots of food! We did the afternoon session, so we didn’t have to spend money on dinner that night. All in all a great experience for the four of us!

Opal was a great host and patient teacher. We had a ton of fun in the class. 😊

Aoy is a great teacher! I went to the class with my wife and both of us could choose different dishes to prepare. I would definitely recommend this class!

The class was so much fun! The instructor was very fun and knowledgeable, and she spoke great English. Cooking the meals was easy, and you can spice your dish as much or as little as you want.

The cooking class is well organized and they offer a variety of options for cooking. Our instructor was opal. She was energetic, kind, and very knowledgeable. Is a very hands on class, and they are very willing to accommodate any specific request you have. One bit of advice, come in hungry!

Had such a good time here! We took the evening course and learned to make 4 delicious courses, including the curry paste for our curry dish. We were lucky to have a really lovely group and An, our instructor, was really sweet as well. After the course, we received a PDF with all the recipes- which we actually preferred to a print version as we won't have to carry it on our backs for the next 6 months! Thanks again for a lovely course, can't wait to try out our new skills once we're back.

The visit to the market was very instructive and Ayn explained and showed us every ingredients we needed to cook our recipe. Back at the school everything was very well explain and the results were delightful. I will definitely recommand that activity.

We had a great time learning how to cook Thai dishes. The experience started off in a market looking at ingredients, before going to the kitchen to prepare the delicious food. It was great to be able to choose which dishes we wanted to learn to cook, and the end result was great!

We arrived a little bit late to the class, but it wasn't a problem for them. They transported us seperatly and quickly to the market and so we don't pass anything. It was so nice! Thank you guys! An and Mind are so nice teachers. We learned to cook traditional thai food easily and had a lot of fun with our group of 6 people. We are thankful of this experience and we will try the menu of our own again. Thank you to our cooking-teachers! :) If you are in chiang mai and you want to do an course, do it there!

The half day cooking class was perfect. They picked us up at the hotel and after a 10 min trip we arrived to the school. The host immediatly jumped in and we went to the market and learned what are the different ingredients, vegetables and flavours of the Thai cousine. After that we went back to the school and started cooking! The host (hui?) is super funny, cute and really knows what she is teaching. Oh, and best english ive listened in Thailand! Get ready to eat from 10 am to 13h as the model is cook serve eat, repeat :) Super experience, I recommend.

I really enjoyed the approach used for learning about Thai food and to cook it in a very friendly way. -The experience at the market before going to the farm house allowed me to get in touch with local product and local people. -Cooking and having diner together is an excellent combination to share thoughts, emotions and tasting food -We only regret only do not to have included the dessert. I recommend this experience!

We used cookly to book our class and the whole experience was great. I loved that we could take an afternoon class and the price was inexpensive. They picked us up and took us to the market where we got to see where the Thai people shop. Aoy spoke perfect English and had a great sense of humour. Picking our own dishes allowed my wife and I to make different items and share. She does not cooked but did a great job in the class. Met some cool people. Definitely recommend and will be a highlight of our trip.

My friends and I did the half day class with Aoy and it was wonderful! Tasty food, great atmosphere and she’s adorable!

I was lucky to be on my own for the class and get the undivided attention of An. She was very good. Helpful at the market when buying ingredients to take back home and her English was very good. Instructions were clear and simple. Finished the 4 dishes in no time at all, as the ingredients were all wahed and ready. Great value, considering the lesson and getting to eat the food you prepared. Highly recommend👍👍

Nous avons pris un cours de cuisine Thaï avec mon conjoint. Le top !!! Un rapport qualité prix exceptionnel. Ils viennent vous cherchez à votre hôtel, puis vous parler avec le prof sur un marché local ou on vous apprend les aliments de base, Comment les reconnaître et les choisir. Puis direction les cuisines (ou vous avez thé, café et eau à disposition) allez y le ventre vide car vous cuisiner chacun 5 plats (donc à deux on a appris 10 recettes!!!!). Vous cuisiner un plat vous le manger, ainsi de suite jusqu'à la fin!!!! Le prof était vraiment génial et l ambiance top Nous étions 4 seulement!!! Nous ne parlons pas hyper bien anglais pourtant nous avons facilement compris la totalité du cours! Je le recommande vivement
