Organic Authentic Balinese Cooking Class with Trekking in the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

We were picked up from our hotel and driven to Jatiluwih by Karma who talked to us about the areas we drove through and gave us information about the impending festival in a few days time as all the villages were putting up decorations. At the UNESCO Jatiluwih rice fields we were greeted by Made and we had a leisurely walk to his organic rice and vegetable farm, while he pointed out different trees and told us about the Subak system farmers are a part of. Once at Kuba Terrace he switched into chef mode and we walked on his farm to collect ingredients for our dishes. In the main kitchen his wife and assistants were busy grating and chopping and we were doing the same in the workshop kitchen. Altogether we made 2 starters, a couple of key sauces such as Bumbu bali and satay sauce, four or five dishes for main and to finish off fried bananas and coffee. Made and his wife were excellent hosts and our meals were delicious- and whats more we feel confident in replicating them at home. This is highly recommended for those who want an authentic experience of food, culture and amazing landscape.

Made and his family are great hosts. After walking through unesco listed rice terraces, we harvested vegies and herbs from the garden then cooked 7 dishes for lunch / delicious!

Could not recommend this cooking experience high enough. Starting our day picked up on time ftom our accommodation, we travelled in air conditioned comfort to the start of our personal guided walking tour through the rice fields to our final cooking destination. The walk was suitable for most levels of fitness, and there was plenty of opportunities to take in the breathtaking visa. Arriving at the organic farm/kitchen our host guided us through the garden to sample and hand select herbs and vegetables for our meal. In the kitchen we were carefully guided to create a three course meal of decadent flavours and textures. This experience has been a highlight of our Bali adventure. .

An incredible experience!!! Made met us at the top of the terraces and we wandered down to his family home at the bottom. Along the way, we learnt so much about their agricultural practices, how and when they harvest, how they deter pests and get the best out of their produce. At Kubu Terrace, Made and his lovely wife Debbie hosted us for an authentic Indonesian cooking class. 6 courses, all imade by us!!! We. Collected herbs, vegetables and fruits from their garden and slwith their expert guidance cooked up a storm. The flavours were vibrant amd just next level. Highly recommend this experience.A wonderful combination of multi-generational knowledge, tradition and culture. Dont miss this one!!!!

The hotel pick-up was perfectly on time, and we were taken to a stunning UNESCO World Heritage organic rice field. The scenery was breathtaking. The cooking class began with harvesting our own organic vegetables, and from there we learned to prepare seven different traditional Balinese dishes — all hands-on. I was deeply impressed by the process of making coconut milk from freshly shredded coconut. The flavors were pure, wholesome, and different from the processed tastes you often find in restaurants — delicious in a way that made my stomach feel happy. Our host entertained us from the drive to the class itself, serving as both the instructor and even playing traditional xylophone music for us. I would love to join again the next time I visit Bali.

We had a really enjoyable day with Made (Mahday) and his family - the Jatilwah rice terraces are truly stunning. We picked what we then cooked and were able to set up a little competitive cooking between family members and then all sat down to eat together. We felt real members of their family and it was a truly exceptional life affirming day - thank you Made ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The entire day spent with Cookly’s Organic Authentic Balinese Cooking Class with Trekking in the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces was an amazingly wonderful time. Booking with Cookly was simple and easy with communication, all done via WhatsApp and email, was prompt and efficient. The actual tour and cooking class was handled by the owner of Kubo Terrace Cooking Class, Mr. Made Senang, and his brother. In fact, his brother was the driver who picked me up at the hotel at 7:15 AM. It took almost 2 hours to get to the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces (Bali Traffic is extremely congested). When I arrived, I met Made, who gave me a tour of the rice terraces as we walked to his establishment, which is located within the rice terraces. As we walked, he explained the rice terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and how the land has been owned within the same families for generations, including his own. I also learned about the growing, harvesting, and drying of red rice, which is what was happening at the moment, so it was pretty neat to see. Seeing the rice terraces and how intensely farmed the entire area is incredibly beautiful. Every inch of soil is used with the grass on the pathways between the rice patties being cut and used for feeding cows, there are banana trees, coconut trees, and other fruit trees grown on the side of the roads, and within each owner’s plot of land. The Kubo Rice Terrace Cooking Class is as amazing and impressive as are the rice terraces as Made and his brother are passionate about the land, the food it produces, and living in harmony with the land. As Made said several times during the day, all the food they need is here on the land. Before starting the cooking, Made reviewed the menu and the ingredients we will use so we knew exactly what to expect during the class. He then surprised us by saying we would be picking all the vegetables and herbs for the recipes out of his garden here at the farm. This included moringa, celery, cucumber, tomato, limes, cabbage, spinach, green beans, coconut, and bay leaves. Amazing! Once we had all the ingredients, we began cooking. Made and his brother explained each step in the process, like why the spices are ground into a pulp and then heated before use; the grinding ensures you get all the spice flavor out of the spice and the heating further activates the spice’s aroma and flavor. We also learned about the spice mixture, Bumbu Bali, which is a staple in almost every Balinese meal. Our menu included Moringa/Kelor soup, mixed vegetables, chicken satay, Balinese chicken curry, chicken dumplings, how to make the dumplings using banana leaves, how to make peanut sauce and finally, for dessert, fried bananas. We then got to eat our lunch while enjoying the panoramic view of the rice fields. The day was a wonderful experience in both seeing the rice fields and learning how to prepare and enjoy local cuisine. I hope you get the chance to do the tour and enjoy it as much as I did.

Cooking at Kubu Terrace was a really great experience! Super authentic, located right in the rice fields on a family farm. Everyone was super lovely and professional. The food was very fresh and authentic. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a true Balinese cooking experience.

well organized cooking class, friendly driver and amazing location somewhere in the rice fields. fresh vegetables were picked along the way. one of the highlights was the interesting garden tour, fascinating to see where the ingredients came from.

It was amazing experience from the beginning to the end. All the way to the terrace where the cooking class was held there were most beautiful sceneries hiking among the wonderful rice fields. The cooking class itself was very practical and fun experience. At first the guide introduced me local herbs and vegetables whitch we picked up from their organic farm yard and used for cooking. They also showed how to cook rice traditional way and the process of coffee making from the berries of the coffee tree. I had the opportunity to make 10 different dishes including the base used in every food plus sauces and sambal. All the dishes were easy to prepare and tasted wonderful. 3-course meal on the terrace with the most beautiful views was a delight. I absolutely suggest this cooking class for everybody who wants not only to cook some Balinese food but also to explore the local nature and rural culture, to experience something truly amazing as the whole event.

Loved every part of the trip. From the hotel pick up, to the driver meticulously driving through the chaotic traffic, the jaw dropping views of the Jatiluwih rice terraces and our own private lookout of the fields at the cooking point. Made was so incredibly kind, welcoming and thorough with the cooking class :) would highly recommend!

Definitely one of our favorite activities in Bali! Made and his family/crew taught us how to cook a Balinese menu. The day included not only delicious food and fun cooking, but also picking vegetables in their garden and a nice tour through the rice fields. We stayed in Ubud and weren't sure if it was worth going all the way up north for a cooking class, but it was totally worth it :) We highly recommend booking this class and getting to know some great recipes and Made and his beautiful team :) Thank you some much for this beautiful experience!

We had such a fantastic fun day yesterday at the Jatiluwi cooking class. The family is so welcoming, telling you the history about the traditional Balinese food. Picking your own vegetables and spices from the garden, while looking out over the rice fields. Highly recommend this day. We will attend again.

Made (Happy) has great English and is very friendly and informative. The scenery is stunning and picking the vegetables from his garden to cook with was awesome. I loved the car ride to his location as we chatted the whole time there and back and I learnt a lot about their culture and way of life plus saw the beautiful scenery /rice fields along the way. If you want to do a cooking class I would HIGHLY recommend this one and it was the highlight of our trip! Have purchased ingredients back in Aus to re cook. Thankyou to Made and his family for having our large group of 8!

It was the best experience in Bali without a doubt! First, a super pleasant walk through the Jatiluwih rice fields early in the morning, without heat and without people, in which Made told us interesting facts about the environment and rice cultivation. Then we arrived at Kubu Terrace to start the cooking class in which we ourselves harvested some of the ingredients that we were going to use in the menu. The kitchen area has incredible views of Made and his family's rice fields. The food is delicious and of exceptional quality, much better than what you can try out there. Also, since you cook yourself, you can moderate the spiciness. During the day they explain all kinds of things related to cooking, the environment and their own life and it is very enjoyable and interesting. I think it is an essential and super authentic experience, far from the typical tourist tours.

We had an excellent and delicious time with our Kubu Terrace Cooking Class. We also liked the fact that the activity was a complete package, with pick-up and return service. The class is beautifully located in the Jatiluwith region and reached after a hike through the delightful sawahs. The Cooking Class is small scale and run by Made Happy with family & friends. Plenty of personal attention. We started with picking/cutting most of the ingredients for a solid “bumbu Bali” from the - organically grown - garden. This gave us a good vibe and understanding of the richness and diversity of Balinese vegetables. After the three course meal, we ended with a tasteful homegrown Bali coffee. We are definitely going to prepare the learned dishes at home (Netherlands) for our friends.

We were absolutely mind blown by the day which started with early pickup. Karma answered all our “tourist” questions whilst expertly driving 1.5 hours to the destination. The scenery was stunning and we trekked to our destination through beautiful UNESCO heritage rice field terraces. The family run business felt personalised and totally genuine. We picked fresh produce from the garden before being delighted in the instruction of how to prepare Bumbu Bali recipe base. Each stage of the meal was supervised and we were able to learn from our lovely host Debi - we thank her and her family very much for welcoming us and sharing their home and stories. Highly recommend!

The walk to the location of the cooking class is breathtaking. Beautiful scenery of ricefield terraces. The picking of ingredients for the cooking class was interesting and fun. The cooking class itself was really terrific! Everybody joins the cutting of vegetables and cooking. The result was a great very tastefull meal. We recommend this cooking experience to everyone!

We really enjoyed this cooking class. It was located at a stunning setting in the rice terraces. Everyone was very welcoming and we were able to learn step by step the process of cooking Balinese food from the garden to the plate. The food was delicious and we made multiple dishes, we left feeling very full and happy.

A great experience, highlights of an easy walk through the stunning rice terraces and located in a real farm within the rice terrace area itself. Immersed in a 3 generation family, farm life and culture were shared by our hosts with husband and wife tutor team with parents in supporting roles. We were able to hand pick some key ingredients from the small farm with a good explanation on these and the farm life itself. Good English, easy to follow, very enjoyable day. A 1+ hour from our hotel in Denpasar, we meandered through small villages and rural landscapes that added to the experience. Would highly recommend.

Amazing and inspiring location. Kind and enthusiastic teachers. We learnt a lot and were in awe of the scenery, smells and tasty food. It’s been our best day in Bali so far and we cannot recommend enough!

This was much more than a cooking class - it included some history, a walk through the rice terraces, and time in Happy’s estate picking the ingredients for the meals we made (and getting to try them all in their freshest form - turmeric, ginger, and the Balinese root veggies and leaves that make up Bumbu and other Balinese dishes) Karma and Happy we’re very warm, informative. The food was extremely delicious. They also provide hotel pickup and drop off for a very wide geographic range. It was great for my vegetarian partner to finally try a vegetarian satay skewer. From pickup to drop off, nothing was a problem. The pickup was on time, and the driver was comfortable with our driver 'Karma', more than happy to point out some sights and answer questions. On arrival, we were made to feel very welcome, and immediately we started on the walking tour through the rice terraces with plenty of information being provided on the way. Our cooking experience was equally entertaining and from picking the herbs and vegetables, through to the preparation and cooking, every step was explained and assistance given. It was lovely to see the family getting involved also. I would thoroughly recommend this tour and we thank Happy, Dewi, Karma, and family for giving us a glimpse into some more traditional processes.

We had an incredible cooking class experience in Bali after a scenic walk through the rice fields. The class was absolutely delightful! We got to make eleven different dishes, and the hands-on approach allowed us to be fully involved in every step. The staff was exemplary, ensuring that we were picked up on time from our hostel in Canggu and safely dropped back. Everything was seamless and top-notch. Highly recommend!

We absolutely loved our time at the cooking class, right from the drive to the countryside, walking through the UNESCO rice fields, picking the produce, cooking, and eating the food. It was so serene and peaceful, and every detail was very well thought out. We particularly liked how the cooking aspect was very hands-on, and cooking non-typical Balinese foods. None of it was too complex, but the flavors were amazing!

This cooking class has been the highlight of our trip to Bali. Karma picked us up from our accommodation and drove us to the rice terraces while sharing his knowledge about the Balinese culture. The walk through the rice terraces was just beautiful followed by picking our own veggies at the organic farm. We had so much fun cooking the delicious dishes and left with a warm heart & full tummy. Such nice people from the start till the end. We had an amazing walk to the farm. The guide knows a lot. We harvest different kind of vegetalbles in the garden, So good! They make pictures, So you can do your job 😄. During cookingclass they explain everything and give help, only if you need. What a wonderful day with an amazing (Unesco) view. O, by the way, my husband got sick and was able to sleep in their house. The family is very hospitable. The day after they sent us the foto’s and asked again if my husband is feeling better. Please, visit them and enjoy a delicious meal, made by yourself.

We had the best day with Madè and his family. They were incredibly hospitable, knowledgeable, and the food we prepared was nothing short of delicious! Our trip down the mountain through the rice paddies was stunning. Madè shared many stories about the land and his family, which made the experience even more authentic. We explored the organic garden and collected all of our herbs, spices and vegetables. Madè and his wife taught us how to cook a large selection of traditional Balinese dishes and desserts. The outdoor kitchen was beautiful and we enjoyed cooking and eating our meal in a stunningly intimate setting overlooking the rice fields and mountains. We highly recommend this cooking class and it was a highlight of our time in Bali.

What a splendid day we had! This was certainly the highlight of our Bali trip. We’ve been to many cooking classes, but this was definitely the best planned and thought through. If you’re looking for a holistic experience of hiking through a UNESCO rice terrace, and farm-to-table Balinese cooking experience (and eating it), this is it. This was the best cooking class that my fiancé and me have ever done, but it’s much more than just a cooking class really. Made, Karma, Made’s wife and mother-in-law made this a truly unforgettable experience and the highlight of our holiday in Bali. We were picked up at 07:30 by Karma from Seminyak and made the 1.5 hour drive to Jatiluwih. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and takes your breath away. We then began a short 2km wander through the rice terraces to meet Made and had lots of photos taken along the way. We went to Made’s home and the base for the cooking class, which takes place in a covered space with unbelievable views over Made’s property. We really can’t emphasise how beautiful the view is whilst you’re cooking and eating! Photos were also taken by Made and Karma throughout. We were given welcome drinks and then started picking vegetables and herbs from Made’s organic garden. We saw vanilla plants, a beehive and amazing chillies, amongst other things. We then started to cook. Over the course of the day, we made Bumbu Bali, which acted as the base for subsequent dishes, Moringa Soup and Sayar Urap. We enjoyed these as a starter. We went on to make Balinese chicken curry, two types of Satay with accompanying sauces, chicken dumplings and rice. The food was plentiful and delicious! Throughout the cooking, it was a very hands on experience, as we went through the recipe booklet and were able to prepare the food and cook it with Made. The kitchen was spotless the whole way through and there was clearly a lot of effort made to ensure that chopping boards, pans, plates and utensils remained clean. There was also a nearby sink and Made provided gloves to handle chicken, if we’d wanted them. We felt like we truly learnt how to make these dishes and also understood the ingredients going into each of them. The recipe book was given to us to take home as a souvenir. We finished by making friend bananas and enjoyed these with freshly made Balinese coffee, which is roasted on site. We were then driven home by Karma. The whole way through the day, we learnt about the history of the rice terraces and how Made’s property is his inheritance. Made explained what the property, and the cooking classes, means to the community there and we saw how much this means to them. We feel really privileged to have been able to attend this class and learnt a huge amount. Thank you so much to you all for this special day! It truly was the highlight of our time in Bali.

What an amazing day! My boyfriend and i ended our wonderful vacation with this amazing cooking class. :D We got a pick up at our hotel, our driver was very friendly. After we arrived in a beautiful town, we met Mate. A Wonderful guy, Who could tell us all about the area and the rice fields. We went on a 30 min hike to the location of the class. The view was unreal! The class itself was amazing as well. Authentic Balinese recipes, wich where simple to make but so delicious. We picked our own vegetables out of Mate's garden, wich was a very nice touch! All and all one of the highlights of our vacation. We did save the best for last! :)

All I can say is wow. You will not find a more authentic cooking class, starting with a short trek through the rice fields to the lovely Kubu Terrace! The family cannot be more welcoming, we used all the fresh ingredients grown right on sight! We absolutely loved it, do not book onto a commercial hotel cooking class, book here you honestly will not regret it. You even get your own cook book to take home so you can cook for the family. Thank you so much ♥️

We went to Made’s house after a short trek through the rice fields. Made and his family made us feel so welcomed. For a city dweller being able to pick our veges off his field and cooking with them is really interesting. And the food wow! Soo soo good. To think we cooked it. Haha Oh and they have a friendly dog miko.

The whole experience was truly amazing! From getting picked up from your hotel by Kutut who was a lovely driver to being able to pick all of your own veggies that you are gonna pick on the farm. It’s a truly authentic experience and the view was amazing, not to mention the food!! 100% recommend

I had no regrets joining the cookly class in Kubu Terrace. It provided free transport, which could be costly if I were to engage my own driver into the UNESCO heritage site deep in the mountains of Bali. After landing at the drop-off point, there was a breezy trek and it seemed short because I was enjoying the greenery along the path. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by our teacher Mr Seneng (which means "Happy" in English). He was friendly and cheerful and that made the class enjoyable. He gave clear instructions, making the dishes easy to learn, even for a cooking novice like me. I went around his farm to pick my own cooking ingredients, had a lot of hands-on in preparing my own dishes, took a lot of photos and had a lot of laughter for the afternoon. I ate all the dishes I prepared and it was a sumptuous meal. Mr Seneng also prepared some spice packs for me to bring back to practise my cooking!

Such an amazing day! This is a small, family run cooking school based at their farm in the rice terraces. The owner and his wife picked us up from Seminyak and drove us all the way to Jatiluwih. It was a long drive (2 hours) but beautiful scenery and worth it for the view and short walk through the rice terraces to their farm. (The walk is easy - down hill and partly shaded). The owner showed his his small organic veggie garden and we picked a few things to use in our cooking. We could watch the men and buffalo working below in the rice terraces. The wife took us for the cooking class and was so friendly and easy-going. The food was amazing and we were given a recipe book so we can try the recipes at home :) Highly recommend.

The cooking class was amazing! So nice and friendly people. Picked our own vegetables and cooked a lot of different Balinese food. It was really nice and we enjoyed it very much. We definitely would recommend it to everyone.
