No cooking class, but cooking in people's homes

This was exactly what we were hoping for: not a commercial cooking class with twenty people on one stove, but just standing with Rohini in her outdoor kitchen. You'll notice that difference immediately. There was plenty of time for explanation, for questions, and for the intricacies of Sri Lankan cuisine that you won't find anywhere in a recipe book. Our children of 12 and 14 were allowed to help out: cutting vegetables, making coconut milk. They loved being a real part of the process instead of watching. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming from start to finish. Afterwards we had a lovely meal with the family, and after dinner there was still plenty of time for a good conversation. One of the most beautiful evenings of our entire trip through Sri Lanka. Recommended for everyone in Ella, and especially with children.

Local authentic cooking experience in Ella

We really enjoyed this cooking class in Sri Lanka. During the lesson, we cooked a chicken curry, several vegetables, a local salad, and egg kottu. They were very flexible and happy to tailor the class to our interests. Since we were particularly keen to learn how kottu is prepared, they adjusted the menu so we could learn that as well. The class was held in their home, using an open kitchen on the terrace, which created a very authentic and welcoming atmosphere. It was a great opportunity to learn more about Sri Lankan spices, traditional cooking methods, and the care that goes into each dish. They took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all our questions, and made us feel comfortable from start to finish. Dietary preferences or restrictions can be shared in advance, and the menu will be adapted without any issue. The timing was also very flexible, which kept the whole experience relaxed and stress-free. All in all it was a unique dinner to us. I’m excited to try the recipes at home and love that they’re open to being contacted again if questions come up later. If you’re in Ella, this is a fantastic activity to experience local life and gain a deeper understanding of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. Definitely recommend it :-)

Best Cooking Class in Ella

Such a lovely experience learning to cook traditional Sri Lankan Curry with Rohini. She is a great teacher and everything was delicious!
