Okinawan cuisine reflects the islands’ warm climate, long history, and unique cultural roots. Unlike mainland Japan’s buckwheat soba, Okinawan soba is made with wheat noodles, offering a satisfying, chewy texture similar to udon. Traditionally served in a soy-based broth and topped with pork, ginger, and green onions, it’s a beloved comfort food across Okinawa.
In this hands-on cooking class, a professional chef and café owner welcomes you into their ocean-view space on Okinawa’s main island. You’ll learn to prepare two local staples: Okinawan soba and Okinawan-style rice, a dish originally made for Obon celebrations that has since become a household favorite. Along the way, your host shares insights into local ingredients, cooking techniques, and Okinawan food culture. After cooking, sit down to enjoy your freshly prepared meal while taking in the calming views of the nearby ocean.
