We had a lot of fun at this Balinese cooking class run at Anika Guest House.
We were a little nervous when we pulled up in front of the guest house as it doesn’t look like much from outside but once through the gates, it is lovely.
The day started with a market tour. The market is authentic which means you will get the meat and fish counters alongside the fruit and veg. We were warned by our guide beforehand that the smell from the meat/fish sections may not please us and he was right but he whizzed past these and we were soon at the fruit, veg and spices stalls looking at the produce and seeing and smelling the items we would later cook with.
Back at the cooking school we were greeted with Hibiscus tea and sweet rice/corn and fruit. Then we got started.
Chef Tommi entertained us as he explained how to prepare the vegetables and spices. Once we had chopped the shallots, garlic, ginger, turmeric and chilli, we then took it in turns to cook various parts of the meal. It was a team effort rather than everyone cooking the whole meal but that was fun. A few dishes we ate as we went along (tofu fritters and chicken sate) but the rest were served as a delicious lunch once we had finished. It was all really good and we were surprised that our favourites were the more unusual dishes we would never had ordered off a menu.
The lunch was finished with some sweet dishes prepared by the staff. Not our type of dish but we gave them a try anyway!
We went as a family - my husband, teenage children (18 & 17) and me - and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If looking for reviews on TripAdviser, please note it is called Anika Balinese Cooking Class. Free transfer through Cookly.me is only one way but they will help you call a Bluebird taxi home, which is very cheap. We spent the afternoon on Kuta beach before returning to the quieter beaches of Nusa Dua. Great day all round!
