Teenage boys from various provinces in China were inadvertently conscripted into Chiang Kai-shek’s army, leaving their homes behind. When the Kuomintang government lost the war, these young men were stranded in Taiwan.
In 1949, the Chinese Civil War left 500,000 soldiers in this isolated state, unable to return home or even send a letter to their families for many decades.
One retired soldier from Sichuan tried to recreate the beef noodle soup his mother used to make, relying solely on his memories of the flavors from his hometown. This bowl of braised beef noodles (牛肉麵) brought him to tears.

Your experience begins with a guided street and market adventure, where you’ll explore local ingredients, learn about traditional Taiwanese food culture, and soak in the charm of this vibrant neighborhood.
With a maximum of just six participants, each class is intimate, interactive, and designed for authentic hands-on learning.
Alex, the host — warm, friendly, and passionate about sharing — teaches in English, Mandarin, Hokkien, and even a bit of Japanese, making the class welcoming to guests from around the world. You’ll prepare every dish from scratch and gain practical skills you can bring home with you.

#Each class requires a minimum of 2 participants. If we don’t reach the minimum, don’t worry—we’ll contact you in advance and offer a reschedule or a full refund at your convenience.
#Come along with your kids (under 12 years old), it'll be free of charge if they don't cook. And they can share your food. If your kids enjoy cooking, please reserve seats for them.#To ensure a safe and focused learning environment for all participants, only registered guests are permitted to join the cooking session. We kindly request that children without a booking do not participate in or assist with the cooking process. However, they are more than welcome to relax in our dedicated resting area, provided the class remains undisturbed.
